How to Make Avocado Soap (Cold Process Recipe)

Avocado is one of the best ingredients you can use in handmade soap. It’s rich in vitamins A, D, and E, deeply moisturizing, gentle, and leaves the skin feeling soft and nourished. Adding fresh avocado puree gives your soap a natural creaminess and a beautiful light green color.

Below is an easy recipe that works whether you’re making soap for personal use or to sell.

Ingredients (2–3 lb Soap Loaf)

Base Oils

Lye + Liquid

  • 4.5 oz sodium hydroxide (lye)

  • 10 oz cold distilled water (can replace 1–2 oz with aloe juice if desired)

Additives

  • 2–3 tbsp fresh mashed avocado (ripe, smooth, no chunks)

  • 1 tsp spirulina powder (optional for deeper green)

  • 1–1.5 oz essential oil blend (optional)

Great scents for avocado soap:

  • Lime

  • Lavender

  • Peppermint

  • Rosemary

  • Eucalyptus + litsea

Instructions

1. Prepare the Avocado

  • Mash 2–3 tbsp of ripe avocado until absolutely smooth.

  • Remove any chunks (they may turn brown in the soap).

  • Set aside.

2. Make the Lye Solution

  • Put on your safety gear.

  • Slowly sprinkle lye into the water (never pour water onto lye).

  • Stir until dissolved.

  • Set aside to cool to 90–110°F.

3. Melt and Cool the Oils

  • Combine all oils and butters in a pot.

  • Melt gently on low heat.

  • Allow oils to cool to 90–110°F as well.

4. Mix Lye and Oils

  • Pour the cooled lye solution into your oils.

  • Stick blend to light trace (similar to thin pudding).

5. Add the Avocado & Optional Color

  • Add the mashed avocado.

  • Stick blend briefly until smooth.

  • Add spirulina (optional) for stronger green.

  • Add essential oils if using.

Mix gently to avoid accelerating trace.

6. Pour Into the Mold

  • Pour batter into your mold.

  • Tap to remove bubbles.

  • Cover lightly.

7. Cure Time

  • Let sit 24–48 hours before unmolding.

  • Cut into bars.

  • Cure 4–6 weeks in a cool, dry place to harden.

Tips for the Best Avocado Soap

1. Do not use too much avocado.

Too much puree can cause soft bars or spoilage. Stick to 2–3 tbsp.

2. Want a lime-avocado bar?

Use:

  • 0.8 oz lime essential oil

  • 0.4 oz litsea cubeba
It smells like a creamy lime dessert.

3. Want a natural green color?

Add:

  • ½ tsp spirulina

  • or ½ tsp French green clay
Both stay green longer than avocado alone.

4. Selling this soap?

Consider names like:

  • “Creamy Avocado Glow Bar”

  • “Avocado & Lime Fresh Bar”

  • “Green Silk Moisture Soap”
